Extract text from a PDF without retyping it
You have a contract, a lecture handout or a long report as a PDF, and you need the words themselves: to quote a clause, paste a paragraph into an email or search through the wording in your own editor. PDF to Text takes the text that is already inside the PDF and hands it back as plain text that you can copy or save as a TXT file.
What “extracting text” means here
Most PDFs made on a computer carry a text layer. That is the text you can select with your cursor when you open the file in a viewer: it was typed, exported from a word processor, saved from a web page, or added by a scanner’s own text recognition. PDF to Text reads that layer and nothing else. It does not look at pictures, and it does not try to recognise letters inside scanned images.
A quick test before you start: open the PDF anywhere and try to highlight a sentence. If the highlight follows the words, there is text to extract.
Step by step
- Drop your PDF on the page, or choose Add PDF and pick the file. One PDF is opened at a time; if you drop several, the first one opens.
- Watch the pages appear. Each one shows up under a small Page 1, Page 2 header as soon as it has been read, and a progress line counts along, for example Page 4 / 12.
- Need a pause on a long document? Press Stop, then Continue when you are ready.
- When every page is done, press Copy all to put the whole text on your clipboard, or Download TXT to save it as a file.
To work on a different document, use Change PDF.
What you get back
The result is plain text: no fonts, no colours, no page layout. Each line on the page becomes a line of text, and the PDF’s own reading order is used. Pages laid out clearly in two columns are read column by column, so an article does not turn into a zigzag of half sentences. Right-to-left lines such as Arabic come out in reading order, and Hindi, Chinese, Japanese (vertical Japanese too) and rotated text are handled.
A context line above the result shows the file name, the number of pages and the number of characters, which is handy when a form or a submission system has a character limit.
Privacy and limits
The PDF is processed in your browser; it is not uploaded to app.zone’s servers. A PDF that needs a password just to open it can’t be opened. If the author switched off copying, PDF to Text explains that and does not show the text. Pages with no selectable text are listed in a note at the top, so you know right away which parts of the document had nothing to read.
