Copy text from a PDF, all pages or just one

Selecting text in a PDF viewer and pressing copy sounds simple, until the pasted result arrives with a line break after every few words, a page number in the middle of a sentence, or the second column mixed into the first. PDF to Text gives you a cleaner route: it reads the whole text layer first, shows it as plain text, and lets you copy all of it or one page at a time.

Why copying from a viewer often goes wrong

A PDF does not store paragraphs the way a word processor does. It stores pieces of text with a position on the page. When you drag a selection across the page, the viewer has to guess which piece comes next, and that guess follows your mouse more than the document’s structure. Selections that cross a column gap, a table or a page boundary are where it usually breaks down. On a phone, selecting more than a screenful is fiddly on its own.

PDF to Text follows the PDF’s own reading order instead of the selection rectangle, and reads pages that are clearly laid out in two columns column by column.

Copy the whole document

  1. Drop the PDF on the page, or choose Add PDF.
  2. Wait until every page has been read; the progress line shows how far it is, for example Page 7 / 20.
  3. Press Copy all.

Copy all becomes active only when the last page is done, so you never paste half a document by accident. The copied text has a blank line between pages, which makes the page breaks easy to spot when you paste into an email or a notes app.

Copy a single page

Sometimes you only need the terms on page 4 of a contract, or the summary on page 1 of a handout. Each page header, such as Page 4, has a small copy button next to it. It copies that page alone. You can also select a few lines inside a page with your cursor, since the text on screen is ordinary selectable text.

Copy or save?

Copying is best when the text is going straight into another app. If you want to keep it, share it as a file, or work with a long document, Download TXT saves a plain TXT file named after the PDF instead.

When copying is not offered

If the PDF’s author has switched off copying, PDF to Text tells you so and does not show or save the text; the file itself is left unchanged. If no page has selectable text at all, you will see No selectable text found in this PDF and Copy all stays off. Everything happens in your browser, and the PDF is not uploaded to app.zone’s servers.
